The Pigeon Point Lighthouse, situated five miles south of Pescadero between San Francisco to the north and Santa Cruz to the south, stands as the tallest lighthouse on the West Coast, alongside Point Arena Lighthouse.
With the Gold Rush in 1848, ship traffic surged towards San Francisco, creating a marine highway. The treacherous coast and dense fog led to incidents like the 1853 wreck of the Carrier Pigeon, influencing the call for lighthouses.
The Pigeon Point Lighthouse, operational since November 15, 1872, marked a new era in maritime navigation along the San Mateo coast.
In 2001, the lighthouse faced structural issues, leading to its closure. A restoration plan of $18 million was initiated in early 2021, with completion expected in 2022, albeit delayed by external factors like COVID-19 and wildfires.
While access to the lighthouse interior is restricted, visitors can explore the park's visitor center, read about the lighthouse's history, and enjoy the scenic grounds.
No dogs are allowed on the grounds, but leashed dogs can access adjacent beaches. Free parking is available, but it might get crowded during peak times. Visitors can witness wildlife, including gray and humpback whale migrations.
